Overview: Opioid addiction remains a significant disease burden in the U.S., and it is crucial that more practitioners understand how to identify, manage, and treat patients with opioid-use disorders as well as learn judicious best practices for opioid prescribingin an effort to prevent opioid abuse. This CME series aims to address this specific practice gap andincludes two training presentations.

This activity has been reviewed by the AAPA Review Panel and is compliant with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 2 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid for one year from 6/28/2020. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.
Lectures Offered:
Clinical Implications of Opioid Pharmacogenomics - 1 CME
This presentation will first provide an overview of opioid pharmacology and clinical usage through the scope of available pharmacogenomics data. There will be much time focused on individual opioid metabolism and how genetic polymorphisms can alter the effectiveness and safety of these medications. At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Discuss opioid pharmacology, analgesic potency, and major metabolism pathways
- Review current literature and guideline recommendations surrounding the use of pharmacogenomics for pain management
- Develop a pain management plan for a patient using pharmacogenomic data
