Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) refers to a group of diseases that includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Over time, COPD makes it harder to breathe. You can’t reverse lung damage, but lifestyle changes and medication can help you manage the symptoms.

Lifestyle changes include quitting smoking and making your home smoke free; staying active; receiving recommended vaccinations; avoiding allergens and irritants; and practicing good hygiene.

Medications that your provider might prescribe include:

  • Bronchodilators - To relax the muscles of the airways and improve breathing. They are often administered through inhalers.
  • Anticholinergics - To relax the muscles of the airways. Anticholinergics work differently and more slowly than fast-acting bronchodilators.
  • Glucocorticosteroids - To reduce inflammation in the airways. Most often as an inhaler.
  • Antibiotics - May be prescribed to avoid or cure lung infections.
  • Expectorants – To thin mucus in the airways so you can cough it out more easily.
