Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) happens when your stomach contents come back up into your esophagus. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a more severe and long-lasting condition in which GER causes repeated symptoms or leads to complications over time. It is estimated that 20% of adults in the United States have GERD. Treatments include lifestyle changes such as weight loss (if obese), elevation of the head of the bed, stopping smoking, and waiting at least 3 hours after eating before lying down. There are a variety of over the counter and prescription medications available.
MAPA recommends you speak with your health care provider to discuss your individual situation.
