June is Alzheimer's and Brain Health Awareness Month Alzheimer’s Disease is one of a variety of diseases and conditions that damage brain cells and impair brain function. It is the most common type of dementia and accounts for up to 80% of cases. Experts estimate more than 5.5 million Americans may have Alzheimer's disease and worldwide, more than 55 million people are living with Alzheimer's or another form of dementia. The causes of Alzheimer’s disease are not currently known. Research suggests a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors may contribute and affect each individual differently. - Challenges in planning or solving problems
- Difficulty completing familiar tasks
- Confusion with time or place
- Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships
- New problems with words in speaking or writing
- Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps
- Decreased or poor judgment
- Withdrawal from work or social activities
- Changes in mood and personality
