January is Radon Awareness
Radon - a colorless and odorless gas that comes from the soil which can accumulate in the air we breathe. This gas decays into fine particles that are radioactive which, when inhaled, can damage the lungs. Exposure to radon over a long period of time can lead to lung cancer. It is the number one cause of lung cancer for non-smokers and the second leading cause of lung cancer in smokers. The average radon level in Minnesota is more than three times higher than the U.S. radon level. This is due to the unique geology and cold climate. During the winter, home heating systems tend to draw in radon gas from the soil, increasing radon levels inside the home. The Minnesota Department of Health provides information provides information on radon and how to protect your family's health. In addition, the US Environmental Protection Agency provides information and resources about radon, its health effects, and its control.
