December is Hypothermia Awareness: Symptoms and Causes

 

Hypothermia occurs when the body gets cold and loses heat faster than the body can make it.

It can occur when you are exposed to cold air, water, wind, or rain. It can occur at a temperature of 50°F or higher in wet and windy weather.

 

Hypothermia is an emergency condition and can quickly lead to unconsciousness and death if heat loss continues. It is important to know the symptoms of hypothermia and get treatment quickly. Signs and symptoms of hypothermia include:

  • Shivering
  • Slurred speech or mumbling
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Weak pulse
  • Clumsiness
  • Drowsiness
  • Confusion
  • Bright red, cold skin (in infants)
