January 2020 PSA: Thyroid Awareness

Friday, January 3, 2020

January is Thyroid Awareness Month

Up to 20 million Americans have a thyroid condition — and up to 60 percent of them don't know it. The thyroid can be either overactive or underactive and both conditions can lead to big health problems.

Symptoms of underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) can include extreme fatigue, depression, forgetfulness, and weight gain. Symptoms of overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) can include irritability, nervousness, shaking, muscle weakness, sudden weight loss and sleeping problems.

If you are experiencing symptoms of thyroid dysfunction your PA, or other health care provider, can request a variety of lab tests to evaluate the situation.
